The jewel of the state of Oaxaca is its capital, originally named Antequera de Guaxaca. The city of Oaxaca, founded in 1521 by the Spaniards, currently has approximately 600,000 inhabitants. It is surely one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico. You will find wonderful examples of Spanish colonial architecture and many archaeological treasures (the city of Oaxaca and the prehispanic ruins of Monte Alban have been declared by UNESCO as places of cultural patrimony to humanity).

Oaxaca is a great place to relax, because of it's altitude and dry, mild climate. It is possible to visit 'el centro' easily on foot. You can stroll through markets and small stores, visit interesting museums and beautiful churches. You can rest in the shade of trees at the wonderful 'zocalo' (the central square) with its music pavilion, cafés and restaurants which can be found under magnificent stone arches.

Relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, taking your time to discover Oaxaca. When you have had enough of the city, visit 'tierraventura' and take a tour to the surrounding villages with their indigenous markets, go for one day or more to the mountains or to the coast and discover the hidden beauties of this state.
