La Cumbre Ixtepeji
Ancient Forests Above the Clouds
Ruta: De las Nubes
One of our favorite forest hikes and surprisingly close to Oaxaca, in just about one hour we reach the high mountain landscapes of the Sierra Norte and enter one of the region’s most beautiful ecosystems.
Our destination is La Cumbre above Santa Catarina Ixtepeji, at around 3,200 meters of elevation. Here, an approximately four-hour loop hike leads us through an extraordinary ancient forest of giant agaves, pink-barked madrones, moss-covered fir trees, and ever-changing mountain light.
This cloud forest is one of the hidden treasures of Oaxaca, rich in biodiversity, cool mountain air, and spectacular views across valleys, ridges, and distant villages. Every season reveals different colors, flowers, and textures.
After the hike, we descend to Las Ánimas, a tiny Zapotec village known for producing the molinillos, the traditional wooden whisk used to prepare hot chocolate. Here we enjoy a lovingly prepared local lunch in a beautiful mountain setting.
A perfect day for those who want to experience the magic of the Sierra Norte — ancient forests, mountain views, and authentic village life, all within easy reach of Oaxaca.
